Kliff Build Guide
Kliff McDuff · Greymane Captain · Protagonist
Kliff is the main protagonist of Crimson Desert and handles the vast majority of the campaign. He is a versatile warrior capable of Sword & Shield, Spear, Dual-Wield, Longsword, and Unarmed combat styles. His skill tree contains 96 skills split across three branches — Stamina, Spirit, and Health — giving him one of the deepest build options of any character in the game.
Recommended Builds
Sword & Shield
Recommended StarterBalanced offense and defense. Use heavy attacks after a successful parry, Force Palm to create openings, and Quick Swap to spear for stagger punish windows.
Recommended Weapons
Primary — Sword of the Wolf (early), then Sword of the Lord (Chapter 2 Kailok reward) for its Wind Slash AoE. Secondary — Warspike Spear for punish windows. Shield — Grey Wolf Wooden Shield early, upgrade to Lifsoth Large Shield (Witch's House in Hernand, 12→35 DEF).
Recommended Armor
Bolton Plate Helm + Canta Plate Armor (Contribution shop in Hernand). Paulenese Cloak (Contribution shop Pailune) for Ice Resistance Lv3 in Everfrost.
Core Skills
Keen Senses (unlocks parry and dodge), Forward Slash, Grappling — Bodyslam upgrade for crowd control, Nature's Echo (spectral clone doubles damage output).
Abyss Cores
Crow's Pursuit (passive crow damage from Crowcaller), Wind Slash (AoE effect on Sword of the Lord).
Dual-Wield Assassin
High DPSAggressive offense focused on precise dodges and counterattacks. Replace your shield with a second one-handed weapon for faster attacks and higher sustained DPS. Best paired with the Blinding Flash Finisher upgrade.
Recommended Weapons
Two one-handed swords — Tauria's Curved Sword (dropped by Crowcaller) is excellent in both hands. No shield.
Recommended Armor
Light armor for mobility. Bolton Plate Helm remains a strong choice for the head slot.
Core Skills
Keen Senses, Blinding Flash — Finisher upgrade, Nature's Echo, Insight Lv3 (execute parries during slow-motion sequences).
Abyss Cores
Crow's Pursuit, Swift cores for attack speed bonuses.
Spear Counter-Attacker
Easy PunishesKeep enemies at the tip of your spear with counterattacks and Stab variations. The built-in ranged option from the Rhinard Cannon provides excellent versatility. Very forgiving and punishing once set up.
Recommended Weapons
Warspike Spear early, upgrade to stronger spears as available. Rhinard Cannon as ranged secondary.
Recommended Armor
Bolton Plate Helm + Canta Plate Armor — same as the Sword & Shield build.
Core Skills
Counter Stance (core spear skill), Stab variations, Keen Senses, Grappling.
Abyss Cores
Destruction cores for raw damage, Fortification for survivability.
Unarmed Brawler
AoE PowerhouseAoE powerhouse using Iron Fists and Grappling combos. Requires high Stamina and precise combo execution. Crucially, glove and boot attack bonuses DO apply to unarmed attacks — unlike weapon-based builds — so stack offensive Abyss Gear on those slots.
Recommended Weapons
None — bare fists. Note: glove and boot attack bonuses apply to unarmed attacks only, not weapon-based combat.
Recommended Armor
Offensive Abyss Gear on gloves and boots is critical. Bolton Plate Helm + Canta Plate Armor for head and chest.
Core Skills
Iron Fists, Grappling — Bodyslam, Lariat, and Meteor Kick upgrades, Nature's Echo.
Abyss Cores
Groundsurge (lava eruption from Myurdin Chapter 7) for devastating AoE damage.
Essential Skills
These skills are effective in all builds and should be prioritized early.
Keen Senses
Unlocks Parry, Dodge, and Counter. Mandatory for all builds — without it, boss fights become brutally unforgiving.
Nature's Echo
Creates a spectral clone that replicates your attacks. Effectively doubles your damage output with no additional input.
Grappling (Bodyslam)
Grab an enemy and use them as a weapon to knock down surrounding foes. Essential crowd control for multi-enemy encounters.
Insight Lv3
Execute parries during slow-motion sequences. Trivializes certain boss mechanics and is especially powerful in Dual-Wield builds.
Force Palm
Creates openings for heavy attacks. Costs 5 Spirit per use but the stagger window it generates is unmatched.
Stat Priority
Upgrade stats in this order for the best survivability and damage output.
Most important. Upgrade first and consistently throughout the game.
Second priority. Required for dodging, combos, and sustained offense.
Third priority. Can wait until mid-game — Force Palm and Blinding Flash are its main consumers.
Pro Tips
- Don't spread skill points across multiple weapon trees. Master one weapon first, then branch out.
- Use Quick Swap after staggering bosses to switch to your highest-damage weapon for punish windows.
- The enemy kill bar provides unlimited Artifacts — farm blockaded areas between story missions.
- Glove and boot attack bonuses only apply to unarmed combat, NOT weapon attacks. Plan your gear slots accordingly.
- The Ignir Sword (Chapter 7, defeat Ludvig) is the best endgame weapon with 5 Abyss Core sockets.
- Combining Crow's Pursuit + Groundsurge Abyss Cores turns Kliff into a walking natural disaster.
About Kliff's Combat System
Kliff is the most flexible playable character in Crimson Desert, capable of mastering five distinct weapon types — Sword & Shield, Spear, Dual-Wield, Longsword, and Unarmed. His 96-skill tree spanning Stamina, Spirit, and Health branches offers a deep progression system. Regardless of your chosen build, prioritize Keen Senses first for parry and dodge access, then Nature's Echo to double your passive damage. Abyss Artifacts are your only progression resource — spend them deliberately and avoid spreading them too thin across multiple weapon trees until you have mastered your primary style.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the best Kliff build for beginners?
- Sword & Shield. It offers the best balance of offense and defense, and the early weapons — Sword of the Wolf and Grey Wolf Wooden Shield — are immediately available from the start of the game.
- Can Kliff use magic?
- Kliff is primarily melee-focused, but his skill tree includes magical abilities like Blinding Flash and Nature's Echo. Ranged combat is also available through Marksmanship skills in the Stamina branch.
- When should I switch from Sword & Shield to another build?
- After mastering parrying and basic combos — usually mid Chapter 3. At that point, you should have enough Abyss Artifacts to invest in a second weapon tree without compromising your core skills.
- What is the best endgame weapon for Kliff?
- The Ignir Sword (20→45 ATK, 5 Abyss Core sockets) obtained in Chapter 7 after defeating Ludvig. Before that, the Sword of the Lord from Chapter 2 is the strongest mid-game option.
- Should I invest in all three characters' skill trees?
- Focus on Kliff first since he handles the majority of the game. Invest in Damiane and Oongka only when they are required for story missions — spreading Abyss Artifacts too thin early on weakens all three characters.
