Synthesize the Abyss Cell
Chapter 1 quest tutorial and endgame farming guide
Abyss Cells are key crafting materials in Crimson Desert that serve dual purposes: they are central to the Chapter 1 main story quest 'Abyss Without Balance' (where you must synthesize an Abyss Cell as a puzzle mechanic), and they are essential late-game resources used to craft Abyss Gears, upgrade Health beyond Level 11, and fuse Abyss Gears into higher tiers. The synthesis puzzle in Chapter 1 introduces players to the Force Palm ability and Axiom Force mechanics, while farming Abyss Cells from Abyss creatures becomes a core endgame activity.

How Synthesis Works
Synthesizing the Abyss Cell is a puzzle mechanic in Chapter 1. It involves using two abilities in sequence: Axiom Force (telekinesis to grab and position objects) and Force Palm (a charged melee punch). The player must grab the floating Abyss Cell component with Axiom Force, align it with a wall socket, then use Force Palm to slam it into place. This is the first time Force Palm is taught, making it a tutorial encounter that introduces a core combat and traversal ability.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Activate the Abyss Nexus
As you enter the area via the skybridge, activate the Abyss Nexus on the platform. This is critical — if you skip this step, the holographic figure that teaches Force Palm will not appear later.
Remove the Wall (Move the Power Core)
Grab the floating power core in the center using Axiom Force and place it on the deactivated lantern to the right. This removes the wall and opens up the level below where the Abyss Cell puzzle takes place.
Learn Force Palm
Drop down to the floor below. You will see a chip-like device in the middle and a ghostly holographic figure demonstrating a punch. Hold the Observe button (L1 on PlayStation, LB on Xbox) while looking at the hologram to learn the Force Palm ability.
Grab and Align the Abyss Cell
Look for the floating blue square — that is the Abyss Cell. Grab it with Axiom Force and bring it to the matching slot on the wall near the three sparking batteries. Rotate the cell using the mouse scroll wheel (PC) or D-Pad (controller) so the flat side faces you, then position it roughly in front of the slot. Don't overthink the alignment — it just needs to be close.
Use Force Palm to Synthesize
Hold Middle Mouse Button (PC) or R3/RS (controller) to charge Force Palm. Release it while targeting the Abyss Cell to slam it into the wall socket. The cell will lock into place and the synthesis is complete. This takes a few seconds to charge up fully.
Activate the Abyss Power Supply
After synthesis, climb out of the pit using the pillars in front of you. Reach the large circular cog mechanism (an eight-pointed wheel with a central disc) above. Position yourself at the center, hang from it, then charge and release Force Palm aimed at the center. The light shifts from golden to white when successful, indicating the power supply is online.
Collect Rewards
Head up the stairs above the cog mechanism to find a floating glowing item. Walk toward it to automatically collect the Abyss Artifact. After speaking with White Crow, you also unlock the ability to glide (Wings).

What Abyss Cells Are Used For
Health Enhancement (Past Level 11)
Once you hit the health cap at Level 11, the only way to keep increasing your HP pool is by spending Abyss Cells in the Skills menu. This is the primary recommended use before spending cells on gear.
Crafting Abyss Gears
Abyss Cells are a required ingredient for crafting Abyss Gears at any Witch NPC. For example, crafting a Destruction Lv.1 Abyss Gear requires 1x Orange-Barred Sulphur Butterfly, 1x Abyss Cell, and 1x Garnet. You need the corresponding Blueprint to craft specific Gears.
Abyss Gear Synthesis (Fusion/Upgrade)
Combine two identical Abyss Gears of the same level to create one of a higher level (e.g., 2x Destruction Lv.1 = 1x Destruction Lv.2). Additional Abyss Cells are consumed during fusion. This is done at any Witch NPC by pressing R2 to select 'Synthesis'.
Special Synthesis (Gacha Roll)
At any Witch, you can combine two random Abyss Gears via 'Special Synthesis' for a randomized result. This is useful when you don't have matching duplicates but want to try for better Gears.
Tips
- Activate the Abyss Nexus as soon as you enter the area — skipping this prevents the Force Palm tutorial hologram from appearing.
- Don't overthink the Abyss Cell alignment during the puzzle — it just needs to be roughly positioned near the wall socket.
- Use the mouse scroll wheel (PC) or D-Pad (controller) to rotate the Abyss Cell so the flat side faces you before using Force Palm.
- After synthesizing the cell, remember to climb out of the pit before trying to activate the power supply above.
- For late-game farming: prioritize spending Abyss Cells on Health upgrades past Level 11 before investing in Abyss Gear fusion.
- The Drakesfall Castle farming route yields 6-10 Abyss Cells per clear — use the nearby fast travel point to reset spawns quickly.
- Always hit strange-looking metallic rocks with Force Palm while exploring — they may be disguised Bismuth Oreback Crabs carrying Abyss Cells.
- Farm during Abyss Storms (purple sky) for the best drop rates on Abyss Cells.
- If Hernand Troops occupy Drakesfall Castle and crabs stop spawning, leave and return after 3-4 in-game days.
- Never sell Abyss Gears — extract them from found equipment at any Witch for free, and save duplicates for synthesis upgrades.
About Abyss Cell Synthesis
Abyss Cells serve dual purposes in Crimson Desert. In Chapter 1's Abyss Without Balance quest, synthesizing an Abyss Cell teaches you Force Palm and Axiom Force — two abilities used in virtually every Abyss puzzle. In the endgame, Abyss Cells become essential crafting materials farmed from Abyss creatures, used to craft and upgrade Abyss Gears and push Health beyond Level 11. The synthesis puzzle requires grabbing the floating component with Axiom Force, aligning it with a wall socket, then slamming it into place with Force Palm.
Frequently Asked Questions
- I'm stuck at the 'Synthesize the Abyss Cell' step. What do I do?
- First, make sure you activated the Abyss Nexus when you entered the area. If you didn't, the holographic figure that teaches Force Palm won't appear. Second, you need to observe the hologram by holding the Observe button (L1/LB) to learn Force Palm. Then grab the Abyss Cell with Axiom Force, position it near the wall socket, and use Force Palm (Middle Mouse / R3 / RS) to punch it into place.
- The holographic figure for Force Palm isn't appearing. How do I fix this?
- You must activate the Abyss Nexus on the platform as you enter the area. This is a prerequisite for the holographic tutorial to trigger. Go back up and look for the flat rocky structure with a circular pattern — stand on it to activate it.
- What's the difference between the Chapter 1 puzzle 'synthesis' and late-game Abyss Gear 'synthesis'?
- They are two different systems that share the term. The Chapter 1 synthesis is a one-time story puzzle where you physically punch an Abyss Cell into a wall socket using Force Palm. Late-game synthesis is a crafting system at Witch NPCs where you combine duplicate Abyss Gears (plus Abyss Cell materials) to create higher-level versions.
- Where is the best place to farm Abyss Cells?
- Drakesfall Castle, located directly north of Hernand, is the best farming spot. It's full of Bismuth Oreback Crabs that drop 6-10 Abyss Cells per full clear. Use the nearby fast travel point to reset spawns. Also farm during Abyss Storms for increased drop rates.
- Should I spend Abyss Cells on Health upgrades or Abyss Gear crafting first?
- Prioritize Health upgrades. Max out your Health past Level 11 before spending cells on Gear fusion. A larger HP pool is more versatile and universally beneficial, while Gears provide more specialized bonuses.
- When can I start using Abyss Gears?
- You can earn Abyss Gears early through Sealed Abyss Artifact challenges, but you cannot socket them into equipment until Chapter 5 after completing the 'Witch of Wisdom' questline, which unlocks the Witch's Lair vendor.
- How do I activate the Abyss power supply after synthesizing the cell?
- This is where most players get stuck. After synthesizing the cell, climb out of the pit using the pillars in front of you. Reach the large eight-pointed cog mechanism above. Position yourself at the center, hang from it, then charge and release Force Palm aimed at the center. The light shifts from golden to white when successful.
- What are Bismuth Oreback Crabs and how do I find them?
- Bismuth Oreback Crabs are Abyss creatures that disguise themselves as strange metallic rocks or ore deposits. You must hit them with Force Palm to reveal their true form. They are commonly found near Abyss Fast Travel Points and are especially abundant at Drakesfall Castle north of Hernand.
