Abyss System Guide
The complete guide to Artifacts, fast travel, Cores, Islands, and gear refinement
Crimson Desert uses no traditional XP or level system. Every aspect of character progression — unlocking skills, boosting stats, and refining equipment — relies entirely on Abyss Artifacts earned through quests, exploration, boss fights, and environmental puzzles. Understanding how to acquire and allocate Abyss Artifacts is the core loop of the entire game.
Abyss Artifacts
Abyss Artifacts are the primary progression currency in Crimson Desert. They replace experience points entirely — every skill unlock and stat investment costs Artifacts. There are three distinct types, each with different sources and functions.
Regular Abyss Artifacts
The standard form of Artifact. Each one immediately grants 1 Skill Point that can be spent in the Skill Tree to unlock or rank up abilities, or invested directly into core stats: Health, Stamina, or Spirit. Regular Abyss Artifacts are earned from completing quests (main and side), solving environmental puzzles, defeating bosses, and filling the enemy kill bar. They are the most commonly encountered Artifact type.
Sealed Abyss Artifacts
There are 141 Sealed Abyss Artifacts scattered across the continent of Pywel, each placed on a roadside shrine or altar. Unlike regular Artifacts, each Sealed one comes with a hidden challenge condition — for example, killing a set number of enemies using a specific weapon type, traveling a certain distance while mounted, or performing a combat technique a defined number of times. When you light your lantern nearby, Sealed Artifacts emit a bright white glow, making them visible from a significant distance. Completing the hidden challenge converts the Sealed Artifact into a regular one that grants a Skill Point.
Faded Abyss Artifacts
A rare and special currency used for resetting your entire skill investment. Using a Faded Abyss Artifact resets ALL skill points for ALL playable characters simultaneously — not just one character. This allows you to reallocate your Artifact spending freely, making builds fully reclaimable. Faded Artifacts are obtained from specific quests and select merchants, and are intentionally scarce to make respeccing a considered decision rather than a routine one.
Abyss Nexus & Cressets
Two distinct fast travel systems exist in Crimson Desert, both tied to the Abyss. Understanding the difference between them is essential for efficient exploration.
Abyss Nexus
Abyss Nexus points are the standard fast travel waypoints found throughout the open world of Pywel. To activate one, simply stand on the glowing platform until it pulses blue — the activation is passive and requires no puzzle. Once activated, you can teleport to any previously discovered Nexus from anywhere in the world. Nexus points are often hidden near Mysterious Energy markers, which you can detect using the Blinding Flash ability.
Abyss Cressets
Abyss Cressets are puzzle-gated fast travel points found at Ancient Ruins sites across Pywel. Unlike standard Nexus points, each Cresset is locked behind an environmental puzzle — solve the nearby puzzle to ignite the Cresset and unlock it as a fast travel destination. As a bonus, activating an Abyss Cresset always grants an Abyss Artifact, making every solved puzzle doubly rewarding. There are approximately 37 Cressets in total, forming the core of the Ancient Ruins collectible system.
Abyss Gear & Cores
Beyond skill investment, Abyss Artifacts can also be used to enhance your equipment through refinement. Abyss Cores are socket items that provide additional passive effects to weapons and armor.
Abyss Cores
Abyss Cores are special items that slot into sockets on weapons and armor to grant passive bonuses. Three main types exist: Swift Cores increase movement and attack speed, Destruction Cores boost offensive attack power, and Fortification Cores improve defensive stats. Weapons have between 1 and 5 Abyss Core socket slots depending on their tier — higher-tier equipment unlocked through refinement provides more socket capacity for greater customization.
Notable Abyss Cores
Some Abyss Cores come from specific boss drops and provide unique effects that go beyond simple stat increases. Crow's Pursuit (obtained from the Crowcaller boss) causes a passive crow to deal damage with every swing of your weapon. Groundsurge (obtained from the Myurdin fight in Chapter 7) triggers a lava eruption beneath enemies. These unique cores make farming specific bosses worthwhile even after completing their associated quests.
Abyss Islands
Abyss Islands are mysterious floating puzzle areas accessible only through Abyss Gates found at the top of spires and certain other locations. Each island is a self-contained challenge zone.
How Abyss Islands Work
Abyss Gates are glowing portals discovered at the summit of spires and through certain story quests. Walking through one teleports you to a floating island suspended in the Abyss — a surreal sky environment with platforms, puzzles, and combat challenges. Solving the island's core puzzle activates a spire at the island's center and spawns an Abyss Artifact as a reward. Each island can only be solved once.
Known Abyss Islands
Several named Abyss Islands are accessible in the game: Chaos Forest (reached via the Spire of Insight's Abyss Gate) is a lush overgrown platform puzzle. Secret Garden (accessed from the Spire of the Stars) features a more vertical, climbing-focused layout. Root's End involves navigating through dense aerial root structures. Precipice of Truth is a combat-and-traversal hybrid island requiring Force Palm and Axiom Force to progress. Each island has a distinct visual theme tied to the region's Abyss content.
Gear Refinement
Gear refinement is the second major use of Abyss Artifacts, alongside skill investment. Refining your equipment increases its tier, which directly improves base stats and unlocks additional Abyss Core socket slots.
How Refinement Works
To refine a piece of equipment, feed Abyss Artifacts into it at a Witch's workshop or crafting station. Each refinement tier requires a set number of Artifacts and raises the item's refinement level. As the refinement level increases, the weapon or armor gains higher base stats and unlocks additional Abyss Core socket slots — a Tier 1 weapon may only have 1 socket, while a fully refined Tier 5 version of the same weapon can hold up to 5 Abyss Cores. Refinement is permanent and does not reset when you use a Faded Abyss Artifact for skill respec.
Balancing Skills vs. Refinement
Because both skill investment and gear refinement consume the same Abyss Artifacts, players must balance how they allocate their resources. Early in the game, prioritizing a few key combat skills (especially Keen Senses for parrying) is more impactful than refining gear. From mid-game onward, refining your primary weapon and main armor pieces becomes increasingly important as base stat differences grow. Overspending on skills while neglecting refinement leaves you dealing less damage with weaker gear, while ignoring skills entirely makes combat mechanically limited.
Artifact Farming Methods
Enemy Kill Bar (Unlimited)
A golden meter displayed to the left of the minimap fills as you defeat enemies. Fill it completely to earn 1 free Abyss Artifact. There is no cap on how many times this can be triggered — it resets and refills indefinitely. Target blockaded areas, enemy camps, and patrol routes for dense enemy spawns.
Chapter 3 Totem Farm (One-Time)
Near the Reed Devil boss area, enemies continuously respawn from totems before the boss is defeated. This window of unlimited enemy respawns is ideal for rapidly filling the kill bar multiple times. Important: this farming window closes permanently once you defeat the Reed Devil boss, so farm it thoroughly before completing Chapter 3.
Quests (Main, Side & Faction)
Major boss fights and quest completions award Abyss Artifacts directly. Main story quests provide consistent rewards at key milestones. Greymane Rumor quests (found in the Faction Quests tab) are among the most time-efficient repeatable sources. Side quests from NPCs throughout Pywel also commonly reward one or more Artifacts upon completion.
Sealed Artifact Challenges
All 141 Sealed Abyss Artifacts placed at shrines across Pywel each have a hidden challenge. Completing each challenge converts the Sealed Artifact into a standard one granting a Skill Point. Light your lantern to see the white glow that reveals their locations. These are one-time collectibles but represent a significant bulk of available Artifacts.
Abyss Floating Islands
Each Abyss Island accessible through Abyss Gates at spire summits rewards 1 Abyss Artifact upon completing its central puzzle. While each island is a one-time reward, solving all available islands provides a meaningful total of Artifacts that supplement other farming methods.
Abyss Cressets
The approximately 37 Abyss Cressets found at Ancient Ruins each award an Abyss Artifact upon solving their associated puzzle and activating the Cresset. They serve double duty as both fast travel points and Artifact sources. Prioritizing Ancient Ruins exploration yields a strong combined return of travel infrastructure plus progression resources.
Vendor Purchases
Certain vendors sell Abyss Artifacts directly for 28.50 silver each. Witch vendors and the traveling merchant Patrigio carry limited stock that refreshes over time. While expensive relative to farming, this is a reliable supplemental source when you need Artifacts urgently and have sufficient silver reserves.
Tips
- Use your lantern while exploring — Sealed Abyss Artifacts glow white when lit, making them visible from afar.
- Balance Artifact spending between skills and equipment refinement. Over-investing in one leaves you weak in the other.
- Don't skip enemy waves during main quests — killing every enemy can net multiple Artifacts per mission.
- The Chapter 3 Totem farm near Reed Devil is one-time only. Farm it BEFORE defeating the boss.
- Prioritize Health stat upgrades early, then Stamina. Spirit can wait until mid-game.
- Abyss Cressets are both fast travel points AND Artifact sources — solving every puzzle is worth the effort.
About the Abyss System
The Abyss System is the backbone of all progression in Crimson Desert. Replacing traditional XP and leveling, Abyss Artifacts fund every skill unlock, stat upgrade, and equipment refinement in the game. There are three Artifact types: regular (instant Skill Point), Sealed (hidden challenge collectibles scattered across Pywel), and Faded (rare respec currency that resets all characters simultaneously). Fast travel is handled through Abyss Nexus points (passive activation) and Abyss Cressets (puzzle-gated, each rewarding an Artifact). Equipment is enhanced via Abyss Cores socketed into gear slots, with higher refinement tiers unlocking more sockets. Balancing Artifact spending between skills and refinement is the central strategic decision throughout the game.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How many Abyss Artifacts are there in total?
- There is no fixed total because the enemy kill bar provides unlimited Artifacts over time. However, the one-time collectibles include 141 Sealed Artifacts, approximately 37 from Abyss Cressets, plus variable numbers from quest completions and boss fights. The kill bar ensures you will never be permanently locked out of progression.
- Can I respec my skills?
- Yes. Use a Faded Abyss Artifact to reset all skill points and reallocate them freely. Note that this resets ALL characters simultaneously — not just one. Faded Artifacts are available from certain quests and merchants. Since they are scarce, think through your intended respec before using one.
- Should I spend Artifacts on skills or equipment refinement?
- Both are important. Early game, prioritize a few key skills first — Keen Senses (for parrying and countering) and Nature's Echo are high value. From mid-game onward, start refining your main weapon and armor to increase base stats and unlock more Abyss Core sockets. The optimal balance shifts as you progress, so avoid dumping everything into a single category.
- What's the fastest way to farm Artifacts?
- The enemy kill bar near the minimap is the fastest unlimited method — focus on blockaded areas and enemy camps for dense spawns. The Chapter 3 Totem farm near Reed Devil is the single best burst farming window but is one-time only. For structured farming, Greymane Rumor faction quests offer the best time-to-reward ratio among repeatable quests.
- What are Abyss Cores?
- Abyss Cores are socket items that slot into weapons and armor to grant passive bonus effects. The three main types are Swift (speed bonuses), Destruction (attack power), and Fortification (defense). Boss drops provide unique cores with powerful special effects — for example, the Crow's Pursuit core from the Crowcaller boss adds a passive crow that deals damage with every weapon swing.
