Arm Wrestling
Mini-game guide – QTE timing, controls, and Hero's Handshake
Arm Wrestling is a mini-game in Crimson Desert, introduced as a mandatory encounter during the "Where Rumors Gather" main quest in the Trials of Kindness arc (Chapter 2). When Kliff enters the Hernand Inn, he must defeat a guard at the arm wrestling table before the story advances. After that first required match, arm wrestling tables appear in taverns throughout the world of Pywel, and can be replayed at any time by paying 20 alms to the Host. The mini-game uses a two-phase mechanic: rapid button mashing to build momentum, followed by a timed QTE (Quick Time Event) where you must press a button at the exact moment a spinning needle enters the highlighted white zone on a circular gauge. Winning arm wrestling feeds into the "Hero's Handshake" challenge chain, which ultimately rewards an Abyss Artifact (Skill Point). All Test of Strength challenges — including arm wrestling — count toward the "True Gamer" trophy and achievement.

How It Works
Arm wrestling uses two core inputs that alternate throughout the match: **Phase 1 – Button Mashing:** As soon as the countdown ends, rapidly tap the mash button (E on PC / Square or X on PlayStation / X or A on Xbox) as fast as possible to fill the red fist-shaped meter. This builds the basic momentum and keeps pressure on your opponent. The meter rises with fast mashing and falls if you slow down. **Phase 2 – QTE (Quick Time Event):** Periodically, a circular gauge appears on screen with a spinning needle and a highlighted white wedge zone. You must press the QTE button (R on PC / X or A on PlayStation / A or X on Xbox) at the exact moment the needle enters the white zone. The white zone appears on the left side of the gauge while the needle spins clockwise. Nailing the QTE grants a burst of momentum, pushing the opponent's arm significantly closer to the table. Missing the QTE wastes the opportunity and your opponent may recover ground. **Winning:** The match ends when the fist meter is completely filled with red — Kliff slams the opponent's hand down. Each successive round gets harder, with faster needle speeds and tighter timing windows.

Tips
- Timing the QTE correctly matters far more than mashing speed. You can win purely by hitting QTE timings accurately — frantic mashing alone will not carry you to victory in harder rounds.
- Press the QTE button a fraction of a second BEFORE the needle visually enters the white zone — there is a slight input lag, so anticipating the timing gives you a better hit rate.
- Assign different fingers to the mash button and the QTE button — do not use the same finger for both. Switching fingers mid-match will cause you to miss timings.
- Controller users: tilting the controller sideways (90 degrees) can make button mashing more comfortable and sustainable over multiple rounds.
- PS5 players (and PS5 Pro users): if the white QTE zone on the circular gauge is nearly invisible, switch to Performance Mode in the graphics settings (Options > Settings > Graphics Preset). Quality and Balanced modes can make the shaded target zone very hard to see. Switch back to your preferred mode after the mini-game.
- The Hero's Handshake I challenge requires winning 3 consecutive arm wrestling matches and then defeating a Champion in a 4th match — plan your stamina and focus for a longer session.
- Later opponents in the Hero's Handshake chain have significantly faster needle speeds. Stay calm and focus entirely on QTE timing rather than panicking about the mash meter.
About Arm Wrestling
Arm wrestling is a two-phase mini-game first encountered as a mandatory match during the "Where Rumors Gather" quest in Chapter 2. Phase 1 requires rapid button mashing to build momentum; Phase 2 is a QTE where you press a button the moment a spinning needle enters the highlighted white zone on the left side of a circular gauge. QTE precision matters far more than mashing speed — accurate timings win matches even against tough opponents. PS5 and PS5 Pro players in Quality or Balanced graphics mode may find the white zone nearly invisible; switching to Performance Mode in the graphics settings fixes this immediately. Complete the Hero's Handshake I challenge (3 consecutive wins + Champion defeat) for an Abyss Artifact.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is arm wrestling required for the main story?
- Yes — the first arm wrestling match is mandatory. During the "Where Rumors Gather" main quest, Kliff enters the Hernand Inn and must defeat the guard at the arm wrestling table to progress the story. Subsequent matches are optional (for rewards and challenges).
- I can't see the white QTE zone on PS5. How do I fix it?
- This is a known PS5 bug (including PS5 Pro) in Quality and Balanced graphics modes. The shaded target zone becomes nearly invisible or completely absent. The fix is simple: go to Options > Settings and switch your graphics preset to Performance Mode. The lower rendering resolution makes the white zone clearly visible. Switch back to your preferred mode after the mini-game.
- How do I replay arm wrestling after the story match?
- Return to the Hernand Inn (or any tavern with an arm wrestling table) and speak to the Host. Pay 20 alms to enter a match. Winning doubles your stake money.
- How do I win the Hero's Handshake challenge?
- Win 3 arm wrestling matches back-to-back without losing, then defeat the Champion in a 4th match. Difficulty escalates with each round — the needle spins faster and the timing windows get tighter. Focus entirely on QTE precision and assign dedicated fingers to each button to avoid fumbling.
- What does the white zone look like and where does it appear?
- The white zone is a highlighted wedge (pie slice) on the circular gauge that appears during the QTE phase. The spinning needle moves clockwise. The white zone always appears on the LEFT side of the gauge. Watch for it to appear and press the QTE button the moment the needle enters it.
