Chapter & Story Guide
Story progression, playtime, and key unlocks for every chapter
Crimson Desert follows Kliff Macduff, leader of the Greymane mercenary company, across the continent of Pywel. The story spans 5 major regions — Hernand, Pailune, Demeniss, Delesyia, and the Crimson Desert — plus the mysterious Abyss dimension. The game uses an Abyss Artifact progression system instead of traditional XP leveling. Players unlock companions, build and upgrade the Greymane camp, and progressively explore a 90km² open world.
Progression System

Regions of Pywel
Hernand
The largest and most densely populated starting region. Dominated by rolling green fields, thick forests, and medieval cities. Home to the Greymane camp at Howling Hill.
Pailune
The northern icy region, ancestral home of the Greymanes. Defined by heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures, and treacherous mountain passes. Overrun by the Black Bears clan.
Demeniss
The political and military capital of Pywel. Features grand fortified cities, military installations, and sweeping golden plains. Hostile until Chapter 8.
Crimson Desert
A barren desert with crimson sand, completely lawless and home to brigands and powerful beings. Contains ancient temples and the Spire of the Sun.
Delesyia
The most technologically advanced region. While the rest of Pywel relies on swords and horses, Delesyia has developed mechanical constructs, automatons, and arcane technology.
The Abyss
A mysterious dimension separate from Pywel. Accessed through Abyss Nexus points and the Ethereal Pathway. Contains floating sky islands with puzzle challenges.
Progression Tips
- Prioritize spending Abyss Artifacts on Kliff first — investing in companions early will slow your progression drastically.
- Increase Health and Stamina early for better survivability, sprinting, gliding, swimming, and climbing.
- Skills marked 'Watch and Learn' can be learned free by observing NPCs or enemies — save your Artifacts.
- Buy meat from the Hernand butcher early and cook Hearty Grilled Meat — it's the best early-game food.
- Craft Palmar Pills (water + insects/plants) for emergency revives at 30% HP during tough fights.
- Balance Artifact spending between Skills and Equipment Refinement — don't dump everything into one system.
- Don't refine gear you plan to replace soon; save Artifacts for weapons you'll keep for multiple chapters.
- Complete side quests in each region before advancing the main story — some are time-sensitive and become unavailable.
- Unlock the ranch early at camp for a steady mount supply; upgrade the kitchen for better food buffs.
- Some traversal abilities are locked behind main story progress — don't expect full exploration freedom from the start.
- Upgrade weapons to maximum refinement before entering Chapters 11 and 12, as bosses are significantly harder.
- After the story, field bosses respawn on timers — the open world remains fully explorable post-game.
- Use the Bell Towers in each region to clear map fog and reveal points of interest.
- The dispatch system at camp is crucial for resource farming and craft technology progression — don't neglect it.
- You can reset skills at any time using Faded Abyss Artifacts, so experiment freely with different builds.
Story Progression Strategy
Crimson Desert rewards thorough exploration of each chapter before moving on. Side quests, bounties, and hidden puzzles are easiest to complete when you are actively in that chapter's region. The camp system in Chapter 3 is a game-changer — rush to that point if you want to start building your base. After completing the main story, the open world remains fully accessible for post-game exploration and optional boss fights. The game has 76 total bosses and 442 quests including side content.
