Mysterious Energy

Understanding map markers, Abyss Nexus, Cressets, and Secret Places

Mysterious Energies are the primary exploration markers in Crimson Desert. They appear on the world map as large white circles with a question mark icon inside, representing undiscovered points of interest scattered across the land of Pywel. Each Mysterious Energy marker conceals one of three types of discovery: an Abyss Nexus (an instant fast travel point), an Abyss Cresset (a puzzle-locked fast travel point that also rewards an Abyss Artifact), or a Secret Place (a hidden area with loot and rewards). Once you investigate a location and discover what it contains, the question mark icon disappears from your map and is replaced by the appropriate point-of-interest icon.

How to Detect Mysterious Energy

Mysterious Energies serve as the core exploration and progression system in Crimson Desert. They tie together fast travel, puzzle-solving, and character progression. When you approach a Mysterious Energy location, your minimap will indicate whether the target is above or below your current elevation, which is especially useful in areas with cliffs, caves, or underground passages. To detect Mysterious Energies from a distance, use the Blinding Flash ability (Ctrl + Left Click on PC, L1+R1 on PlayStation, LB+RB on Xbox) from high ground. Blue light effects will appear at the horizon pointing toward nearby Abyss-related points of interest. You can also use Guiding Light, which causes your sword to reflect light and highlight nearby Abyss Nexus points with a blue glow when you are already close to a location.

Types of Discoveries

Abyss Nexus

Standard fast travel points that appear as stone plates on the ground. Simply step on the central circle until it glows blue to activate them. No puzzles or prerequisites required. They are scattered across all regions of Pywel and are the most common type of Mysterious Energy discovery.

Abyss Cresset

Puzzle-locked fast travel points typically found within Ancient Ruins. You must solve an environmental puzzle before the Cresset activates. There are over 60 Secret Place locations containing Abyss Cressets across Pywel. Each one rewards an Abyss Artifact (skill point) upon completion, in addition to unlocking a fast travel point. They are tracked in your journal under Challenges as 'Secret Places'. Finding all of them unlocks the 'Pilgrim of Wonders' trophy/achievement.

Secret Place

Hidden areas that contain valuable loot, gear, and other rewards. In the Challenge Menu they are called 'Secret Places', while on the map they show up as 'Abyss Cressets' after discovery. These often require specific abilities unlocked through the main story to access, so you may need to return to earlier locations as you progress.

Sealed Abyss Artifacts

Locked polygonal-shaped cubes found on roadside shrines throughout Pywel. There are 141 total. Each one has a hidden challenge revealed upon picking it up. Once you complete the associated challenge, you consume the item to claim the reward. They can be detected at range using Blinding Flash — they emit a distinctive ring of white light from a distance.

Abyss Restoration Challenges

There are 40 Abyss Restoration challenges located on the floating sky islands of the Abyss realm. Completing them unlocks additional fast travel points in the sky, from which you can skydive down to surrounding surface areas. Note that only Kliff can access these points; Damiane cannot use the Abyss fast travel network.

What They Unlock

1

Fast Travel Network

Both Abyss Nexus and Abyss Cresset points serve as fast travel locations once activated. They appear as blue icons on the map. You can fast travel by hovering over them and pressing Y (controller) or double-clicking (keyboard). Important: you cannot fast travel while mounted, so dismount your horse first.

2

Abyss Artifacts (Skill Points)

Abyss Cressets reward Abyss Artifacts upon completion. These function as skill points that can be spent in the Skill Tree to unlock new combat abilities, passive upgrades, and stat boosts for Health, Stamina, and Spirit. The Skill Tree has three branches organized by core stat: Health (Red), Stamina (Blue), and Spirit (Green). Abyss Artifacts can also be used for gear refinement to push equipment to higher tiers.

3

Character Progression

Investigating Mysterious Energies is one of the most important activities for character progression. Every Abyss Cresset activated grants skill points for upgrading Kliff's abilities. Priority upgrades include Health Level 4 and Stamina Level 4, followed by all 3 Pre-Slash skills (Blue) and 3 Keen Sense skills (Green), then Nature's Echo (Green tree).

4

Exploration Challenges & Achievements

Mysterious Energy discoveries count toward Exploration Challenges tracked in the 'The Thread in the Forest' journal tab. Completing all Secret Places unlocks the 'Pilgrim of Wonders' trophy/achievement, and they contribute to the 'Expert Explorer' trophy/achievement. There are 37 Ancient Ruins puzzle challenges in total.

Tips

  • Use Blinding Flash from elevated positions (mountain peaks, towers, cliff edges) for maximum detection range. The wider field of view reveals more distant Mysterious Energy locations at once.
  • Ring the bell towers in each town you visit. This uncovers a large area around the settlement on your map, revealing nearby Mysterious Energy markers without needing to explore on foot.
  • It is highly recommended to ring all 8 bells first to fully unfog the map. Grab fast travel points along the way to the bells, then use the unfogged map and available fast travel to efficiently explore remaining locations.
  • Many Ancient Ruins puzzles require specific abilities unlocked through the main story. If you find a puzzle you cannot interact with, note the location and return later after progressing further in the campaign.
  • Pay attention to the minimap elevation indicator when approaching a Mysterious Energy. It shows whether the target is above or below you, which is critical for locations hidden in caves or on cliffs.
  • You can use the Abyss sky islands as a vantage point. Teleport to the Abyss and skydive down to scout the surrounding surface area for points of interest.
  • Clear enemy camps while exploring. When an area returns to your allies' control, enemy patrols disappear from nearby roads, making exploration safer and faster.
  • If thorn bushes block a path to a Mysterious Energy, burn them using Blinding Flash (light reflection) or a fire arrow. To get a fire arrow, nock a normal arrow and hold it over a fire bowl.
  • Always prioritize Boss fights for Abyss Artifact drops, as bosses are guaranteed sources of these valuable progression items.
  • You can craft Faded Abyss Artifacts at the Witch's Cauldron (unlocked in Chapter 4 at Scholastone) to reset your entire skill tree. The recipe requires 1 Abyss Cell (dropped by Abyss-corrupted creatures) and 2 Mercury (found in frozen pools at Hex Sanctuary and Silver Wolf Mountains), plus 12 silver coins and 8 hours of real time for research.

About Mysterious Energy

Mysterious Energies are the primary exploration markers on the Crimson Desert world map, shown as white circles with question marks. Each one reveals either an Abyss Nexus (instant fast travel point), an Abyss Cresset (puzzle-locked fast travel that also grants an Abyss Artifact skill point), or a Secret Place with hidden loot. Use Blinding Flash from high ground to detect distant markers, or Guiding Light near close ones. Finding all Secret Places unlocks the Pilgrim of Wonders achievement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Mysterious Energy question marks on my map?
The white circles with question marks represent undiscovered points of interest. They can contain an Abyss Nexus (simple fast travel point), an Abyss Cresset (puzzle-locked fast travel point with an Abyss Artifact reward), or a Secret Place with loot. Investigating them is essential for unlocking fast travel and powering up your character.
How do I find Mysterious Energy locations?
Use the Blinding Flash ability (Ctrl+Left Click on PC, L1+R1 on PlayStation, LB+RB on Xbox) from high ground. Blue light effects will appear at the horizon pointing toward nearby Mysterious Energy locations. You can also ring bell towers in towns to reveal surrounding map areas, and check your minimap for elevation indicators when you are close.
What is the difference between Abyss Nexus and Abyss Cresset?
Abyss Nexus points activate instantly when you step on them — no puzzles required. Abyss Cressets require you to solve an environmental puzzle before they activate, but they also reward an Abyss Artifact (skill point) upon completion. Both function as fast travel points once unlocked and appear as blue icons on the map.
I found a puzzle I can't solve. What should I do?
Many Ancient Ruins puzzles require specific abilities that Kliff learns during the main story. Abilities are unlocked progressively, so if you cannot interact with a puzzle mechanism, you likely need to advance further in the campaign. Mark the location and return later once you have unlocked the required ability (e.g., Focused Force Palm, Axiom Force).
How do I use Abyss Artifacts?
Abyss Artifacts function as skill points. Spend them in the Skill Tree (accessible from the menu) to unlock new combat abilities, passive upgrades, or increase your core stats (Health, Stamina, Spirit). They can also be used for gear refinement. If you want to respec, craft a Faded Abyss Artifact at the Witch's Cauldron in Scholastone (Chapter 4) to reset your entire skill tree. Note that resetting any character's tree resets all three characters' trees.
Can I fast travel while riding my horse?
No, you cannot fast travel while mounted. You must dismount your horse first before using any Abyss Nexus or Abyss Cresset fast travel point.
How many Mysterious Energy locations are there in total?
The exact total varies as guides are still being updated, but known counts include: over 60 Secret Places (Abyss Cressets), numerous Abyss Nexus points across all regions, 40 Abyss Restoration challenges in the sky islands, and 141 Sealed Abyss Artifacts scattered on roadside shrines. Combined, there are well over 200 Abyss-related discovery points across Pywel.
Can Damiane use the Abyss fast travel points?
Damiane can use Abyss Nexus and Abyss Cresset fast travel points on the surface world. However, Damiane is locked out of the Abyss realm's sky island fast travel network — only Kliff can access those teleport points.
What is the best order to explore Mysterious Energies?
Ring all 8 bell towers first to fully reveal the map. While traveling to the bells, activate any Abyss Nexus points you pass along the way. Once the entire map is unfogged and you have basic fast travel coverage, systematically investigate remaining Mysterious Energy markers region by region. This approach saves significant travel time compared to exploring blind.
How do I reset my skills if I spent Abyss Artifacts on the wrong abilities?
You need a Faded Abyss Artifact to perform a full skill reset. Reach Scholastone in Chapter 4 and start the 'Research on the Abyss Energy Restoration Phenomenon' project (costs 12 silver, 8 hours real time). Once learned, craft at the Witch's Cauldron using 1 Abyss Cell (from Abyss-corrupted creatures) and 2 Mercury (from frozen pools in Hex Sanctuary and Silver Wolf Mountains). Using it resets all three characters' skill trees simultaneously.
