Chapter

Chapter 3 - End of Greed

Difficulty

High (first major skill check boss)

Overview

The Reed Devil is the first major boss encounter in Crimson Desert, fought at the end of Chapter 3. He is a masked figure who terrorizes the citizens of Hernand — formerly a slum-dweller whose fate changed after he donned a mysterious mask and inherited dangerous powers. The fight takes place in a scenic field of flowing reeds atop the Mountain of Frozen Souls. The Reed Devil wields a blade with extraordinary speed, can teleport, and employs both melee combos and ranged attacks. He has 3 full health bars and the fight is divided into 3 distinct phases.

Recommended Preparation

Base Health and Stamina should be at level 4-5. Equip the Sword of the Lord (obtained from defeating Hornsplitter Kailok in Chapter 2) paired with a shield for stamina-efficient blocking. Purchase Bolton Armor Set pieces (helm, chest, boots) from the Hernand Contribution Shop to reach a defense rating above 20. Bring at least 40 pieces of grilled meat for healing. Use the Grindstone near the boss arena (left side of the reed field) to sharpen your weapon before entering. Activate the Abyss Cresset fast travel point on the hill next to the arena. Recommended skills: Keen Senses level 2 (for parrying), Blinding Flash (for stunning), and Evasive Roll (for dodge recovery after getting hit).

Quest Chain

1

Traces in the Manor

Investigate Glenbright Manor for clues about the Reed Devil. First encounter with the Reed Devil storyline.

2

Nonhuman

Track the Reed Devil from Grace Manor using the lantern to reveal yellow tracking lines. Follow the trail to a hut where the Reed Devil escapes.

3

Seed of Unease

Continue tracking the Reed Devil southwest through a canyon, fighting through ambushes by the Reed Devil's henchmen. Destroy scarecrows to stop enemy spawns. Reach Reedwind Valley and interact with the altar to trigger the boss fight.

4

Dance with the Devil (The Face Behind the Mask)

The boss fight against the Reed Devil. Inspect the Devil of the Reed Field's Doll on the altar to begin the encounter.

Fight Phases

1

1v1 Duel

A straightforward 1v1 melee duel. The Reed Devil attacks with rapid sword combos, then briefly sheathes his blade — this is your main damage window. He can teleport around you and uses a distinctive red-glint stance before certain attacks.

Attack

Rapid Combo Slashes

The Reed Devil briefly vanishes, then reappears and unleashes several lightning-fast multi-hit slashes in quick succession.

Counter

Block with shield to absorb damage at the cost of stamina. Parrying any single hit in the combo will cancel the entire chain and stagger him. Use Keen Senses level 2 for easier parry timing.

Attack

Swift Stab (Sword Draw)

The Reed Devil assumes a lowered stance with a red glint on his blade, then performs a devastating two-hit slash followed by a teleport combo. If you attack during the red-glint stance, your blade will bounce off leaving you vulnerable.

Counter

Do NOT attack when you see the red glint and lowered stance. Dodge sideways or maintain distance and wait for the attack to finish before counterattacking.

Attack

Ranged Knife Throw

When the Reed Devil creates distance and reaches for his belt, he throws several knives at you in rapid succession.

Counter

Raise your shield immediately or dodge sideways multiple times. Keep moving to avoid being hit by consecutive knives.

Attack

Burrow Attack

The Reed Devil dives underground. A ground effect indicates his position, but the visual disappearing does NOT mean he is about to emerge — stay alert.

Counter

Watch the ground effects carefully. Do not drop your guard when the visual indicator fades. Be ready to dodge or block the moment he resurfaces.

2

Destroy the Totems

After depleting the first health bar, the Reed Devil becomes completely immune to damage and summons 5 totems across the reed field. He also creates multiple aggressive clones of himself that swarm you. You must destroy all 5 totems to strip his immunity and advance to Phase 3.

Attack

Clone Swarm

Multiple copies of the Reed Devil appear and aggressively chase you across the battlefield, attacking with sword strikes.

Counter

Ignore the clones entirely. Do not waste time fighting them. Sprint between totems and focus only on destroying them.

Attack

Totem Shield

The 5 totems grant the Reed Devil complete damage immunity. They are spread across the field and must all be destroyed.

Counter

Use Explosive Arrows for maximum efficiency — they can be fired while running without breaking mobility. Alternatively, use Focused Shot or Charged Shot skills to destroy totems from a safe distance. Keep rolling and sprinting between shots.

3

Aggressive Final Phase

The Reed Devil returns to melee combat but is significantly faster and more aggressive. He adds powerful ranged energy wave attacks and crescent-shaped projectile barrages. This is the most challenging phase of the fight.

Attack

Enhanced Rapid Combos

Same rapid slash combos as Phase 1, but faster and more erratic with less recovery time between chains.

Counter

Stay close to the boss to prevent ranged attacks. Parry to stagger him and follow up with heavy attacks during the stagger window.

Attack

Energy Wave Slashes

The Reed Devil sends sword-slash shaped energy waves across the battlefield from a distance. High damage and difficult to block.

Counter

Dodge sideways instead of blocking — blocking these drains too much stamina. Staying close to the boss reduces the frequency of this attack.

Attack

Crescent Projectile Barrage

The Reed Devil jumps to the edge of the field and unleashes 3-4 chained volleys of crescent-shaped energy projectiles covering a wide area.

Counter

Keep your shield raised while dodging sideways. If stamina runs low, prioritize dodging over blocking. Stay mobile and do not stop moving during the barrage.

Attack

Iaijutsu Strike

A devastating quick-draw sword technique. The Reed Devil sheathes his blade and performs an extremely fast unsheathing slash with massive damage.

Counter

This is his most dangerous single attack. Time your parry precisely or dodge at the last moment. Using Blinding Flash to interrupt the charging animation is highly effective.

Rewards

Sunset Reed Cloth Gloves

Hand armor with two perks: Fluttering Reeds (bonus effect) and passive health regeneration. A strong equipment piece for the early-to-mid game.

Abyss Artifact

A consumable resource used to unlock abilities, increase Kliff's stats (health, stamina, spirit), and upgrade equipment.

600 Hernadian Contribution

Region reputation experience points for Hernand. Accumulate contribution to unlock items in the Hernand Contribution Shop.

Learnable Skills

Swift Stab

Perform a powerful follow-up attack after a successful charged Stab. Learned via the Watch & Learn system during the boss fight — when the Reed Devil performs this move, the screen darkens and a 'Learning' bar appears in the top-left corner. Face the boss and hold the Interact button to observe. You must witness the move multiple times (counter shown as e.g. 1/3) to fully learn it. This skill is also indicated in the skill tree, so you can save Abyss Artifacts by learning it for free during the fight.

Tips

  • Activate the Abyss Cresset fast travel point on the hill next to the arena before engaging. If you die, you can restock supplies and return instantly.
  • Use the Grindstone on the left side of the reed field to sharpen your weapon right before the fight. This maximizes damage output for the entire encounter.
  • Food is the single biggest factor in this fight. Bring 40+ grilled meat (each restores ~140 HP). With enough food, this fight becomes manageable even if undergeared.
  • Stamina is more valuable than raw damage. Invest in Stamina upgrades — blocking the Reed Devil's fast flurries costs significant stamina.
  • Sword and Shield is the recommended weapon combo. Shields are far more stamina-efficient for blocking than two-handed swords or spears.
  • In Phase 1 and 3, the Reed Devil always sheathes his blade after completing a combo chain. This brief pause is your primary damage window — attack quickly then immediately prepare to block again.
  • Blinding Flash (LB+RB) is the most important skill for this fight. It stuns the Reed Devil, interrupts his charged attacks, and holds him in place for free damage.
  • Force Palm is excellent for building up the boss's Stun Meter, breaking his guard for extended damage windows.
  • In Phase 2, ignore the clones completely. Focus 100% on destroying the 5 totems using Explosive Arrows while sprinting between them.
  • In Phase 3, stay as close as possible to the Reed Devil. He rarely uses Energy Wave attacks at close range, limiting him to more predictable melee combos.
  • Walking near the tree in the center of the field immediately triggers the boss cutscene — make sure you are fully prepared before approaching.
  • You can learn Swift Stab for free via Watch & Learn during this fight. Let the boss cycle through his attacks and observe when the Learning prompt appears.
  • The Bolton Armor Set from the Hernand Contribution Shop significantly improves survivability. Prioritize the helm, chest armor, and boots.

Tips

How do I find the Reed Devil?
The Reed Devil is encountered during the Chapter 3 main quests. Start with the 'Nonhuman' quest at Grace Manor — go upstairs, speak with the Servant, observe the blue memory outlines, then exit through the window and use your lantern (L1/LB) to reveal yellow tracking lines. Follow the trail through the 'Seed of Unease' quest, fighting through ambushes in the canyon, until you reach Reedwind Valley at the top of the Mountain of Frozen Souls. Interact with the altar near the central tree to trigger the boss fight.
What is the recommended level and gear for the Reed Devil fight?
Your Health and Stamina should be at least level 4-5. Equip the Sword of the Lord with a shield, and aim for a defense rating above 20 by purchasing Bolton Armor pieces (helm, chest, boots) from the Hernand Contribution Shop. Most importantly, bring at least 40 grilled meat — food supply matters more than gear level for this fight.
How do I destroy the totems in Phase 2?
Use Explosive Arrows for the fastest and safest method — they can be fired while running. Alternatively, use Focused Shot or Charged Shot from range. Completely ignore the Reed Devil's clones and sprint between totems. The Reed Devil is immune to all damage until all 5 totems are destroyed.
How do I learn Swift Stab from the Reed Devil?
During the fight, when the Reed Devil performs the Swift Stab move, the screen will darken and a 'Learning' progress bar appears in the top-left corner showing a counter (e.g. 1/3). Face the boss with your camera and hold the Interact button. You need to observe the move the required number of times to fully learn it. Don't rush the fight — let the boss cycle through attacks so you have time to observe and learn.
Can I return to fight the Reed Devil if I lose?
Yes. There is an Abyss Cresset fast travel point right next to the arena. Activate it before the fight so you can instantly return after restocking food and supplies at a town. The fight resets completely when you return.
What are the best skills to use against the Reed Devil?
Blinding Flash (LB+RB) is the most valuable skill — it stuns the boss, interrupts charged attacks, and creates damage windows. Keen Senses level 2 makes parrying much easier, which is essential for staggering him. Force Palm helps build up his Stun Meter. Evasive Roll lets you dodge immediately after getting hit, which is critical during his fast combos. For Phase 2, Explosive Arrows or ranged shot skills are crucial for destroying totems efficiently.
